ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY

FULL TIME AND PART TIME STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

Engineering is one of the priority skills sorely needed by the South African economy.

The Central Johannesburg College’s School of Engineering Technology (ET) offers both full time and part time courses to contribute to the development of this priority skill in young and adult (working) learners.  A large number of Engineering students enroll for full time study, which is offered weekdays (Monday to Friday) between 8 am and 4 pm.  Working students who intend to either complete their studies, or require a FET qualification to complement their Higher Education qualifications with more of hands-on practical training, enroll for part time classes, which are offered on Saturdays.

Four departments constitute the School of Engineering Technology:

·         Mechanical Engineering

·         Electrical Engineering

·         Electronics Engineering

·         Building and Civil Engineering

While the School of ET is based at Ellis Park Campus, a portion of its National Certificate Vocational programme, specifically Engineering and Related Design (in the area of Automotive Repair and Maintenance as well as Engineering Fabrication) is offered at Alexandra Campus

STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

Courses offered fall into two categories:

·         National Technical Education (Nated) qualifications from N3 up to N6.  These are full time and part time trimester programmes.  Enrolment takes place three times a year, every three months, giving students the opportunity to complete their studies over a minimum period of one year, to one year and three months, depending on their level of entry (i.e. N3 or N4).

The minimum entry requirement for students wishing to enroll into N3 is a N2 qualification or equivalent.  However, those with a N3 qualification or a Grade 12 qualification with Technical subjects can enroll into N4.

External examination takes place at the end of each trimester, after which successful students

receive a National Certificate issued by the Department of Education, for the level that they wrote for.      [click here to view or download brochure]

·    Vocational Study in the form of the new and practically oriented National Certificate Vocational (NCV) at NQF Levels 2 and 3  Three NCV programmes are currently offered at NQF Levels 2 and 3, which are:

    - Engineering and Related Design

    - Civil and Building Construction

    - Electrical Infrastructure Construction.

NCV NQF Level 4 will follow in January 2009.

The full duration of study is three years, with each level spanning over a year.

These are full time, year programmes, which are more learner-centred, with a unique feature of integrating theory and practice in the lecture room and in dedicated workshops.

The NCV programme was introduced in January 2007 with the view to accelerating skills development in the country.  As a result, young people (and adults) with a minimum entry requirement of Grade 9, with no prior background in any of the three courses offered, can enroll into vocational study at NQF Level 2 in the School of ET.  A graduate in NCV NQF Level 4 will be in a position to proceed into either continued study at NQF Level 5 at an institution of Higher Learning, employment, or for those with an entrepreneurial potential, self-employment.

THE NCV PHASING IN PROCESS

While the NCV programme is being phased in, the Nated programmes are being phased out.  In January 2007, the N1 programme was phased out, and the NCV Level 2 was introduced.  The NCV Level 3 was introduced in January 2008 while the N2 programme was phased out.  As a result, 2008 will be the final year for intake of students who wish to enroll for the N3 programme.  Naturally, the NCV Level 4 will follow in January 2009, while the N3 is phased out.

FINANCIAL AID FOR NATED AND NCV PROGRAMMES

Registered students, who are South African citizens, of both the Nated N3 – N6 and NCV NQF Levels 2 – 3 programmes, can apply for financial aid in the form of bursaries.  Students are not required to pay the money back on completion of their studies.

The FET Department of Education Bursaries for NCV students covers the following for every successful applicant:

·         Tuition fees

·         Textbooks

·         Accommodation

·         Traveling

Three categories of College Bursaries are awarded to successful applicants at any of the Nated N3 – N6 levels.  These are:

·         Academic Merit Bursaries - targeted at students who show exceptional academic performance

·         Financial Assistance - targeted at students who are financially needy

·         Special Cases - for students who are destitute

OFFICIAL ENROLMENT DATES FOR 2008

·         First Trimester: 08 – 18 January 2008

·         Second Trimester: 08 – 16 May 2008

·         Third Trimester: 01 – 05 September 2008

A WINNING INTERNSHIP MODEL FOR ALUMNI

Students who have completed their N6 National Certificate are encouraged to register their Curriculum Vitae with the Centre for Employment and Entrepreneurship Development (CEED).  The College assists in placing some of these students into internship programmes of twenty-four months with various relevant private and public organizations to enable them to achieve two important objectives:

·         To obtain the necessary experience required when applying to the Department of Education for a National Diploma in their respective fields of study

·         To acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in preparation for employment or self-employment

The College has successfully placed former students in certain organizations such as Eskom (for Electrical Engineering alumni) and Bombela (for Building and Civil Engineering alumni, working on the Gautrain construction).
