ENTERPRISE AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

SCHOOL OF ENTERPRISE AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The School of Enterprise and Business Development (EBD), located at the Parktown Campus, aims at developing future entrepreneurs.

STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

Students have a wide variety of study choices.  Programmes offered fall under two categories:

·         Semester programmes in the form of National Technical Education (Nated) programmes from N4 up to N6.  Enrolment takes place twice in a year, every six months.  Students wishing to enroll for these programmes will study over a minimum period of eighteen months.  These are Management Courses (Business Management, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management and Financial Management) as well as the Management Assistant course, all of which are targeted at students with a minimum entry qualification of Grade 12.

External examination is written at the end of each semester, after which successful students receive a National Certificate issued by the Department of Education, for the level that they wrote for.

Vocational Study in the form of the new and practically oriented National Certificate Vocational (NCV) at NQF Levels 2 and 3.  Four NCV programmes are currently offered at NQF Levels 2 and 3: Marketing; Management; Finance, Economics and Accounting; as well as Office Administration.  NCV NQF Level 4 will follow in January 2009.

The NCV programme was introduced in January 2007 with the view to accelerate skills development in the country.  As a result, young people (and even adults) with a minimum entry requirement of Grade 9, with no prior background in any of the four courses offered, can enroll into vocational study at NQF Level 2 in the School of EBD.  A graduate in NCV NQF Level 4 will be in a position to proceed into either continued study at NQF Level 5 at an institution of Higher Learning, employment, or self-employment.

The full duration of study is three years, with each level spanning over a year.

These are full time, year programmes, which are more learner-centred, with a unique feature of integrating theory and practice in a simulated environment as well as real business incubations on campus.

External examination is written at the end of the year for each level.  However, students are required to sit for an internal examination in the middle of the year.

THE NCV PHASING IN PROCESS

While the NCV programme is being phased in, the Nated programmes are being phased out.  In January 2007, the pre-matric National Intermediate Certificate (NIC)/N2 were phased out, and the NCV Level 2 was introduced.  The NCV Level 3 was introduced in January 2008, while the pre-matric National Senior Certificate (NSC)/N3 were phased out.  Naturally, the NCV Level 4 will follow in January 2009.

FINANCIAL AID (BURSARIES) FOR NATED AND NCV PROGRAMMES

Registered students, who are South African citizens, of both the Nated N4 – N6 and NCV NQF Levels 2 – 3 programmes, can apply for financial aid in the form of bursaries.  Students are not required to pay the money back on completion of their studies.

The FET Department of Education Bursaries for NCV students covers the following for every successful applicant:

·         Tuition fees

·         Textbooks

·         Accommodation

·    Travelling

Three categories of College Bursaries are awarded to successful applicants at any of the Nated N4 – N6 levels.  These are:

·         Academic Merit Bursaries - targeted at students who show exceptional academic performance

A WINNING INTERNSHIP MODEL FOR ALUMNI

Students who have completed their N6 National Certificate are encouraged to register their Curriculum Vitae with the Centre for Employment and Entrepreneurship Development (CEED).  The College employs some of these students on an internship programme of eighteen months in various relevant college departments or in small business incubations to enable them to achieve two broad objectives:

·         To obtain the necessary experience required when applying to the Department of Education for a National Diploma in their respective fields of study

·         To acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in preparation for employment or self-employment

In June 2006, the College employed the first group of interns, placing them across its campuses and sites.  The model proved to be successful, as almost all of these former students have been absorbed into full-time employment by various companies and organizations.  Based on this success, a second group was taken in in January 2007.  CEED is inundated with enquiries from former and final semester students looking for an internship opportunity.
