SCHOOL OF COMMUNITY ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The School of Community Enterprise Development (CED) was established with the view to opening up study opportunities to a wider group of people.

The following departments/areas are found in the School of CED:

·         Department of Skills Development, which offers engineering-related skills programmes.

·         Department of Enterprise and Skills Development, which aims at assisting previously disadvantaged groups to obtain the necessary enterprise skills to start a small or communal venture in the quest to earn a living and thus alleviate poverty.

·         Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), which offers basic to advanced to internationally accredited ICT programmes.

·         Department of Open Learning, which aims at opening up distance learning to largely working students

·         Learnerships, which are targeted at unemployed youth who require experiential learning in various fields of study so that they can  be employable.

STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

Students have a wide variety of study choices.  Programmes offered can be categorised as follows:

·         Skills Programmes at NQF Levels 2 and 3:  Enrolment takes place once in January of each year.  These engineering-related year programmes are targeted at students with a minimum entry qualification of Grade 10.  Classes are offered on a full time basis, Mondays to Fridays, with a large practical component, across three campuses, namely Ellis Park, Alexandra and Highveld’s Riverlea Site.

·         Enterprise and Skills Development programmes:  Enrolment takes place every three months,three times in a year, for all programmes.  Theses are trimester, enterprise skills programmes targeted at young and adult learners in need of basic knowledge in a particular area.  Courses include Basic Cooking, Basic Sewing, Hare Care and Adult Basic Education.  Only one course, Pastel/Payroll Accounting, is offered on a semester basis, with two enrolments every six months.

·         Information and Communication Technology programmes:  These are critical ICT programmes from Basic Computer Skills programmes to internationally recognized programmes accredited by reputable ICT organizations such as CISCO and Microsoft.  Offered at the well-resourced Troyeville ICT Learning Resource Centre, these are highly sought-after programmes, with a high success rate.

Students have a wide range of choice of courses, and as a result, duration of study varies from three months to six months to nine months,depending on the chosen course. 

Saturday classes are also available for working students who wish to enroll for the International Computer Driving License (ICDL).

Semester Programmes(Pastel/Payroll Accounting):

        08 - 18 January 2008

        07 - 11 July 2008

·         ICT programmes:

    - Basic Computer Skills: registration takes place at any time as students learn at their own pace to   complete a total of 70 - 80 hours of learning

    - Six months programmes:    First Registration : 08 - 18 January 2008

                                           Second Registration: 8 July - 11 July 2008

    - Nine months programmes:   08 - 18 January 2008
